''Conan'' had always been an obvious inspiration for the ''Ancient Lands'', as did the ''Dark Sun'' campaign setting and many others. While the ''Ancient Lands'' are strictly a fantasy world with no advanced technology or any connection to other planets, the setting is also inspired by the style of some science fiction movies of the 80s, in particularly ''Star Wars''. Many of these movies are not about the technology at all, but all about brave heroes fighting horrible monsters in dark and isolated places, like ''Alien'' or ''The Thing''. The ''Ancient Lands'' attempt to capture some of the atmosphere, themes, and overall style of these movies while moving them from space into a world of endless forests and oceans where the heroes fight the monsters with bronze blades and magic instead of guns and blasters.
