The Barbaripedia is a compiled archive of all the released information on the Ancient Lands fantasy setting by Martin Kallies (Yora).

The Ancient Lands' go back to a couple of ideas for a campaign inspired by the High Forest from the Forgotten Realms setting and its ancient history almost ten years ago. The current iteration of the concept started in early 2011 and had most of the major races, cultures, power groups, spirits and magic in place very early, with the work of the following years mostly concentrating on constantly refining the ideas and creating a geography in which to place all these elements.

The main inspiration behind the Ancient Lands was the Savage Frontier region from the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game, which much like Middle-Earth in the The Lord of the Rings is a a vast land of wilderness covered in the ruins of mostly forgotten former empires and only a few last remnants of elves, dwarves, dragons, and giants still clinging on to the memories of their long lost greatness. An approach to fantasy worlds that has been copied countless times and has become a kind of default setting for fantasy in general. But quite often the stories of these lost realms and their great heroes that are mentioned in passing are a lot more exciting and intriguing than the world in which the actual story is taking place now. The Ancient Lands are an attempt to create a fantasy world set at a much "earlier" period in the evolution of such settings, where the old empires are not long forgotten and the great monsters mostly extinct, but when the humanoid people are only just at the very beginning of their rise to greatness.

The world of the Ancient Lands is firmy set in the Sword & Sorcery genre of fantasy, being created from the ground up to be an environment most suited for personal adventures of exploration of an unknown world and battling the monsters of the wilderness rather than for large scale affairs between kingdoms or defending the world from a powerful demonic enemy of all humanity. Conan had always been an obvious inspiration for the Ancient Lands, as did the Dark Sun campaign setting and many others. While the Ancient Lands are strictly a fantasy world with no advanced technology or any connection to other planets, the setting is also inspired by the style of some science fiction movies of the 80s, in particularly Star Wars. Many of these movies are not about the technology at all, but all about brave heroes fighting horrible monsters in dark and isolated places, like Alien or The Thing. The Ancient Lands attempt to capture some of the atmosphere, themes, and overall style of these movies while moving them from space into a world of endless forests and oceans where the heroes fight the monsters with bronze blades and magic instead of guns and blasters. For more information on the works that ispired the Ancient Lands, see the Inspirations page.
